The Homecoming Statue

As can be readily seen from the artist's sketch of sculptor Nathan Scott's design, the statue will capture that magical and special moment when the sailor returns home to family and community. The Provincial Capital Commission has kindly given the project an outstanding site on the Victoria Inner Harbourfront. When completed, the site will not only be a place for Victorians, but also a prominent and desirable tourist attraction for the over 3 million visitors annually to the south island.

As we head into 2010 the initial artist concept for the site illustrates the maturity level of the project. Essentially the statue in clay has been completed by Nathan Scott and he will be commencing the actual process to replicate the "Homecoming" into the finished statue in time for the unveiling 4 May 2010.

Work on the site is now the main focus and preparatory clearing and repairing will commence 1 Feb. Regretably, costs associated with the site have risen as unforeseen repairs and remediation require immediate attention. Consequently, continued fundraising, particularly the sale of commemorate bricks for placement at the site, will be essential to meet our revised goal. It is the intention of the project, should fundraising exceed our revised goal, to provide funds to the Military Family Resource Centre here in the Victoria community.

The end result will see a statue site that will be appropriate for the "Homecoming" Statue and will be a lasting source of pride to the Victoria community and the Navy.
